Monkey Drills for BJJ

” A BJJ Workout Video by Noah Spear and Jason C. Brown”

Noah Spear, BJJ Blackbelt and CBJJ World Champion is a master of body weight exercises for improving BJJ. Noah uses many of these body weight or animal movements for his BJJ specific warm-ups prior to class and as a way of Free Style BJJ Conditioning.

If you remember from this other Free Style BJJ Conditioning video that I posted last week. Noah really just plays with his movements, never really focusing on sets, reps or an ultimate outcome other than his movement itself. Despite his freestyle BJJ conditioning, Noah is one heavy and strong dude.

These videos were filmed a while back at our old facility but their value is still intact.

Actually, Noah’s approach to training does call into question the orthodoxy of fixed reps, sets, etc. You’d have to admit that free style training does more closely approximate the conditions of competing on the mat where every move and countermove is at least slightly novel in some way–fluid situations, ever-changing angles, etc. It reminds me of the training approach of the legendary bodybuilder, Sergio Oliva, whose training routine was pretty much dictated by listening to his body and working on whatever he felt like on any given day.
